In this role, you will shape, grow, and lead a high-performing engineering team, guide team decision making on complex architectural tradeoffs, and collaborate closely with leadership. The Role We are seeking an accomplished Director/Manager of Engineering with a strong background in scaling systems at fast-growing startups and bringing structure and process to our engineering team. In this position, you will shape the engineering organization at Kintsugi and lead a talented team of engineers to ensure scalability, performance, security, and maintainability. This role is remote (Bay Area proximity preferred) and will report directly to one of the co-founders. Qualifications Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a growing organization of ambitious, hyper-talented engineers. Partner with product, business, and operations stakeholders on roadmaps, timelines, and technical strategy. Champion engineering and operational excellence, establishing metrics for quality and velocity. Work with executive leadership to set expectations. You'll manage risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs inevitable in complex project delivery. Be a coach, thought partner, and sounding board. You will help your team build problem-solving skills by practicing reflective listening, asking good questions, and giving timely, direct, and kind feedback and encouragement. Recruit, engage, and retain great problem-solvers and collaborators. You'll be responsible for building diverse, inclusive teams, where everyone feels comfortable and safe being themselves at work. We're looking for someone who: Has significant experience as a hands-on technical contributor earlier in your career Knows how to participate in the technical details while still empowering your team to make decisions Has a deep understanding of modern software development practices Enjoys coming up with pragmatic solutions to concrete problems using first principles thinking Knows how to balance the business and technical needs of an organization. You can communicate and make the appropriate tradeoffs to support the needs of the organization. You can create the right level of engineering given the needs of our business and the resources available Has 3+ years of management experience; We'll want to hear how your reports developed and grew under your leadership, and how you enabled an inclusive and collaborative culture. Has exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You should be able to explain your approach and the impact of your work to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a way that is clear to them. Has the ability to attract talent and develop high-performing teams. Has the ability to balance business needs, a sense of urgency, and shipping high quality and pragmatic solutions Keeps up with the industry trends and identify new tools to use to solve technical problems Minimum qualifications: An advanced degree in Computer Science or other quantitative fields Strong programming skills with expertise in Python, Node.js, Linux Experience working with APIs, developer products, and developer tools Experience setting up Data and Machine Learning pipelines Experience developing enterprise-ready applications Experience with CI/CD and Security for GCP, Postgres, Firebase, and GitLab Bonus qualifications: Working at a high growth startup Experience working on ML model optimizations and deployment Experience with PyTorch, Flask, Kubernetes, Airflow, Terraform, and Docker Working in healthtech or healthcare Experience defining and building new teams and departments Kintsugi is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
