We’re looking for someone who is passionate about building visually compelling, scalable, performant web front-ends for external showcases of DeepMind’s research and internal tools that help enable research at scale. No machine learning experience is required for this role.

This role sits inside the Technological Infrastructure (TI) organisation at DeepMind, which incorporates our rich Technology Ecosystem. The objective of this Tech Ecosystem is to deliver the technical capabilities we need to accelerate and enable new research directions in pursuit of our company Mission and to tell the story of research at DeepMind.

TI teams play a critical role in the mission of DeepMind in multiple ways. In the simplest form, improving the workflow has a super-linear impact on research efficiency, as not only does it free up more time - but the extra cognitive space can allow new research ideas to thrive that would otherwise never happen.

The role

We're looking for talented software engineers with experience in front-end development who are interested in creating and enhancing platforms to help research flourish! You’ll join an inspiring and collaborative environment, working on ground-breaking technology with potentially extraordinary impact. As a member of the team, you’ll focus on building useful tools & features to help make research faster.

In this role, you will:

• Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance web tools to help researchers visualise, understand, and showcase AI
• Optimize performance to enable interactive multi-dimensional exploration of large scale data (serialization, caching, rendering, etc)
• Collaborate with designers, other software engineers, and work directly with users to improve the user experience of internal tools
• Gather user feedback, rapidly prototype new functionality, develop high quality front-end code
• Operate on an agile team with prioritization from company leadership requiring cross-functional partnership on projects

Our front-end platform:

• TypeScript / Angular / Sass
• RxJS and functional programming idioms
• JSON REST and gRPC-Web APIs
• Backend services in Go / C++ / Python / Java

About you

Minimum qualifications:

• A degree in computer science, software engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong experience with modern web technologies: any of React / Angular / Polymer / Web Components / etc.
• Experience with TypeScript or Flow.
• Familiarity with scalable frontend development (performance, modular code, testing frameworks, etc).
• A clear interest in DeepMind's mission, although prior experience in a research or AI environment is not required.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with full-stack development.
• Experience with user research & UX design.
